Peeps Research

For those of you who have not discovered the sillier side of science, I share this link. Not actually being a scientist myself, I am thoroughly impressed with the methodologies, high-tech equipment and attention to detail of these brilliant researchers in setting up and documenting this groundbreaking exploration. While their work on the effects of smoking seems a little "been there/done that," they manage to put a compelling twist on it. The separation of conjoined quintuplets (photo above) was very enlightening!


Mostly, this just goes to show that there's an awful lot of down time in college labs across the country, and people with enough imagination and spare time can come up with some pretty serious stuff . . .

It's raining this morning. Again. I shouldn't mind. My grass is green and my flowers are happy and blooming in their little garden. I should be grateful for the rain, but I want some sunshine today - either a nice late-summer baker to drive me to the beach, or a crisp and breezy early fall day to get my blood flowing. Just not rain. It's raining, and my checkbook is essentially done for the month. Not a good sign on the first day of the second week. No one here is going to starve. All the bills will be paid. Out of the Darkness

New experiences come in the strangest forms, at the strangest times, in the strangest places. The following account could be considered mildly inappropriate (mostly by my mother, so you guys are all set) -- pah! Who am I kidding? Tame is a bit of a wild descriptor for my style, but this did happen in a public bathroom. There, I said it. I took a very long walk today while John was off at the airport meeting incoming students. My job was to meet one of the students at the bus station and get him to his host family's home. It was the perfect opportunity for a leisurely three mile stroll across town. I love walking, and with good shoes, I can walk practically forever. Seriously. John can't keep up with me, and he's the runner/athlete/ weight lifter/ jock. Go figure. Walking is my deal. The Days of Milk and Roses

Marie reminded me of this story, which I realized I haven't ever posted here. It is one of my favorite stories to tell on my sweet husband. It is from our years in Texas, while he was working on his PhD in Spanish Linguistics. When we arrived in Texas, we had two little boys in tow. When we left five years later, our fourth child was a month old. We lived in married student housing and lived off his graduate teaching assistantship, which came to about $700 a month. Even with adjustment for inflation, it wasn't much. And it certainly wasn't enough. We made do, though, mostly by finding fun things we could do that didn't cost anything at all. Gifts . . . well, gifts came mostly from Santa Claus (who at that time still looked an awful lot like my angel mother), or were handmade or otherwise inexpensive . . . well, no . . . free was more like it.
